An Evening With Fred Beckey
Snowy Owl Theater @ Icicle Creek Center for the Arts - 7409 Icicle Road Leavenworth, WA 98826
Friedrich Wolfgang Beckey was born on January 14, 1923 in Düsseldorf, Germany. A legend among many generations of mountain climbers, Fred is an American rock climber, ice climber, mountaineer and author, and best-known for having made hundreds of first ascents, more than any other North American climber. Countless climbing partners over the years can all attest, Fred is one motivated-to-go climbing individual.
Long ago, Fred made climbing his life focus and has meticulously catalogued the climbing history of the Cascade Range in the 3-volume Cascade Alpine Guides published by the Mountaineers. Many owners of the books refer to them as the “Beckey Bibles.” In 2003, Fred published (via the Oregon Historical Society Press) a comprehensive history of the region, Range of Glaciers, winner of a 2004 Washington State Book Award. This 563 page historical odyssey presents a wide range of materials from dozens of United States and Canadian archives and countless first person accounts.
Notable local first ascents include the 1948 ascent of Castle Rock via the Midway Route (said to be the first modern rock climb in Washington) and the 1960 ascent of Snow Creek Wall via the Outerspace Route (said to be the most popular route in Washington).
Come join Fred for a slide show featuring his expeditions to Mt. Kenya and China, a historic video of the 1949 2nd Ascent of Lighthouse Tower in the Enchantments of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Leavenworth, WA and if time permits, one other short film (TBD). During a short intermission we will have a raffle featuring various in kind donations from local businesses. All proceeds from the evening will be donated in Fred’s name to the Chelan County Volunteer Mountain Rescue Group based out of Wenatchee, Washington.
